Our Purpose
We live in a rapidly changing world. New technology has facilitated an incredible quality of life in our modern world. Orthopaedics, as with all areas of medicine, has made an incredible contribution to our ability to have long, active lives and contribute to our community for years well beyond what was possible in previous generations.
Newcastle Orthopaedic Research Institute (NORI) was established in 2020 by local orthopaedic surgeons Stephen Kemp, Ben East and Minas Petrelis. The concept for NORI grew out of a desire for these surgeons to work collaboratively on innovation and the development of best clinical practice in the realm of Orthopaedic Surgery in Newcastle.
A registered Charity and Not for Profit organisation, the NORI group is involved with the delivery of the highest level of orthopaedic care and innovative and cutting-edge surgical techniques.
Dr Stephen Kemp
Dr Stephen Kemp has over 25 years’ experience as a hand and upper limb surgeon. Having completed orthopaedic training locally, he engaged in an extra two years of sub-speciality training in hand surgery, microsurgery and arthroscopic surgery of the upper limb and open shoulder surgery before returning to Newcastle.
He established Hunter Hand and Upper Limb Surgery in 1993 and continues to build expertise in this specialised area.

Dr Benjamin East
Dr Benjamin East is an Australian trained Orthopaedic Surgeon who sub-specialises in shoulder and elbow conditions and treatment. Dr East also works as a General Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon in Newcastle at John Hunter Hospital, a level 1 Trauma Centre, treating all types of complex orthopaedic trauma.
Dr East regularly performs professional development instructional courses and lectures in shoulder and elbow surgery.

Dr Minas Petrelis
Dr Minas Petrelis is your friendly local Orthopaedic & Upper Limb Surgeon specialising in Shoulder Surgery.
Dr Petrelis established his practice in 2007 and provides patients in Newcastle and the surrounding areas with specialised orthopaedic surgery ranging from upper limb and shoulder joint replacements to elbow and carpal tunnel surgery.
